What are Digital Mupis?

A Digital Mupi (Urban Furniture for Information) is a communication tool used for outdoor advertising that employs digital screens in public spaces with high visibility. These devices replace traditional billboards, which use printed posters, with screens that display multimedia content remotely managed by Digital Signage Software, such as videos, animations, and high-definition images. Their implementation in urban areas has revolutionized how brands and organizations interact with the public.

History and Evolution of Digital Billboards

Digital billboards are an evolution of something that has been in use for a long time: urban furniture dedicated to advertising and communication. The concept of billboards, as we know them today, was introduced in the 1960s by Jean-Claude Decaux, who invented an innovative model of public service funded by advertising in Lyon, France. Since then, the design and functionality of billboards have changed dramatically, going through various stages:

  • 1920s to 1960s: During this period, traditional billboards were simple structures made of paper or metal
  • 1980s: The start of digitalization introduced digital printing and LED lighting, making billboards much more versatile and attractive to brands
  • 2000s: Outdoor advertising underwent a major transformation with digital technology. Billboards began to include screens, offering greater flexibility, interactivity, and impact
  • 2010s and 2020s: With more advanced digitalization, billboards became a sustainable solution, reducing environmental impact and incorporating interactive features like real-time information, audience measurement, and compatibility with mobile devices. Today, they are widely used in environments such as shopping malls, transportation hubs, airports, highways, and busy streets.

The adoption of digital billboards in Portugal reflects this global trend, with 20% of outdoor advertising networks becoming digital, totaling over 1,400 digital units in Lisbon and Porto.

Characteristics of a Digital Mupi

Digital mupis differ from traditional ones by using screens that can display multimedia content such as images, videos, animations, and even audio, offering a more powerful visual impact and more effective communication with the target audience. The digital mupi uses LCD or LED screen technology to deliver advertising content in a more dynamic and attractive way. Some of their key characteristics include:

  • High Resolution and Visual Quality: Digital mupis offer superior image quality, capable of delivering clear and impactful messages regardless of lighting or environmental conditions
  • Dynamic Content and Real-Time Updates: One of the primary advantages of digital mupis is the ability to update content remotely and in real-time. Campaigns can be scheduled and adjusted based on various factors such as the time of day, weather conditions, or even specific events
  • Better Targeted Advertising: Through the use of sensors and data analysis software, digital mupis can segment audiences based on demographic characteristics and interests, allowing for more targeted and relevant ad delivery
  • Interactivity: Many digital mupis support interactive functionalities such as touch screens and voice recognition, providing a more engaging experience for the user.

Advantages of Digital Mupis

The evolution from traditional to digital mupis has brought several significant benefits for advertisers and users:

  • High Visibility: Located in strategic areas such as shopping centers, busy streets, and public transport terminals, digital mupis ensure constant and broad exposure
  • Greater Content Flexibility: The ability to display different types of content at specific times and locations allows for more adaptable and efficient advertising campaigns
  • Real-Time Updates: With simple access to a content management system (CMS), advertisements can be changed and updated immediately, allowing for more agile campaign management
  • Performance Measurement: Digital mupis can be integrated with analytical tools that monitor the number of views, interactions, and other important KPIs to assess campaign success
  • Sustainability: The use of digital mupis contributes to the reduction of physical waste such as paper and ink, making them a more eco-friendly solution in advertising management
Digital Signage and Radio in Lupo stores

About the Digital Signage and Radio Project

The hardware used in the stores consists of 65'' TCL consumer TVs and Raspberry Pi players, thus offering a quality solution at a reduced cost.

Given the capacity of the Digital Signage World VDS software, which allows the same player to manage both the screen display and the audio broadcast in the stores simultaneously, the solution becomes even more powerful. As if that weren’t enough, the same Raspberry Pi player is also capable of managing broadcasts on videowalls composed of 2 connected screens.

The TV broadcasts managed by StoreTV focus on presenting videos and images of the new seasonal collections and the ongoing promotions that Lupo has.

For audio creation, they also use one of our apps, which allows generating Voice Spots through Artificial Intelligence (AI).

The radio channel aims to tailor the sound environment to the audience according to the time of day and day of the week, reinforcing the space's identity while making both employees and customers more satisfied, increasing their willingness to purchase and boosting sales.
